Sultanbeyli is one of Istanbul province’s districts. The name of Sultanbeyli used to be known as the “Place of Sultanbeyli”, and then it was recognized as “Sultan Beyliği Ranch” to be replaced by the current “Sultanbeyli”.
The history of Sultanbeyli goes back the very old periods. During the eras of the Roman and Byzantine Empires, the region stretching from Üsküdar to Gebze used to be the administrative center of a feudal landlord.
Sultanbeyli was conquered in 1328 (728 Hijri) by the Ottoman army commanded by Akça Koca, Konur Alp and Abdurrahman Gazi following the orders of Orhan Gazi. In 1945 a part of migrants coming from Bulgaria have been settled in Sultanbeyli by expropriating 7500 acre land. As a result of rapid building activities between the years of 1985-1987, Sultanbeyli has gained its current character. On 31 December 1987 it was decided to set up a municipality in Sultanbeyli village. First municipal elections were held in 1989. Sultanbeyli has become a district in 1992.
